    Overview & Important Information

On behalf of the Brooks Rehabilitation Institute of Higher Learning (IHL), we hope that you and yours are safe and healthy.  Due to the unprecedented challenges and health concerns associated with the global COVID-19 pandemic, we are not accepting applications for student observations until further notice.  Please continue to monitor this webpage for updates.

Clinical observation opportunities are available for students to obtain hours shadowing a Brooks Rehabilitation Therapist or Nurse. Hours are provided to students who would like to gain exposure to their field of interest, or to fulfill academic institution admissions requirements.

Observation hours for PT/PTA, OT/OTA, SLP, are offered every Wednesday from 9:00am – 3:00pm. Observation hours for nursing vary therefore; select your top three choices.  To apply for an experience, click on one of the links below. Please note that the required Observation Student Compliance Packet must be completed and uploaded to your application. Completed packets will not be accepted via email. Failure to upload and submit the compliance packet prior to your observation will automatically result in your application not being selected. If you are requesting to observe between November 1st and March 31st verification of receiving the flu shot is required.

Recreation students should contact Kelly Devenny at Kelly.Devenny@brooksrehab.org for the application and available observation hours.

What to expect after you submit an application:
Observation opportunities are assigned on a first come, first serve basis. Availability is limited in each site and placement is not guaranteed. After an application is received, the scheduling process will begin. If your request can be accommodated, you will receive email notification.

*Please note that if you do not show up or formally cancel an observation experience that you have signed up for, you will not be permitted to reschedule or observe at any other Brooks Rehabilitation location; If you’ve already signed up for another date/location, it will be automatically terminated. To view more information regarding cancellations and rescheduling, visit the FAQ’s below.

    Questions?
If you have any questions or concerns about the request process, please email info@brooksihl.org.

    Frequently Asked Questions:

“The site and discipline I want to shadow is not available on the date I need, what should I do?”
Reapply with a different set of dates.

“I’m not sure what discipline I want to shadow, I’m just looking for rehabilitation observation experience.”
Sites that provide multi-disciplinary services are great for students who are not positive on their desired track. Please select one of these sites, signing up for the discipline that is closest to your interest.

“Can I just email someone my completed compliance packet?”
All packets must be uploaded to the application, otherwise you will not be selected to observe.

    “What should I wear?”
As outlined in the compliance packet, please wear business casual attire.

“I can no longer attend the observation I signed up for, what should I do?”
Send an email to info@brooksihl.org to notify us so that another prospective student can obtain hours.

“How can I shadow multiple days, or in multiple Brooks locations?”
Students are permitted to sign up for 1 observation day per location. If more hours are desired, please search for availability at other Brooks locations.

“I did not show up or formally cancel my observation reservation, but I really need hours. How can I get them?”
If you do not show up or formally cancel an observation day that you have signed up for, you will not be permitted to reschedule or observe at any other Brooks Rehabilitation location; If you’ve already signed up for another date/location, it will be automatically terminated.

“I know a therapist at Brooks and they said I could come shadow them, how can I make sure they are the person I observe?”
Observations are not assigned based off an individual’s availability. If you want to shadow a certain therapist, sign up for one of the experiences at their site/location.

“I know a therapist that said I could shadow them on a day or at a location that is not listed on the sign-up sheet, what should I do?”
Setting up an observation outside of the Brooks IHL is not authorized.

“There are not any hours available for me to shadow before my application is due, what should I do?” Check for availability among all of the locations listed, or check back for cancellations that open up a spot, though placement is not guaranteed.

“I want to shadow at Brooks location that is not listed, how can I complete my hours at that specific site?”
Only the locations listed are available for student shadowing.
